Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders

While it’s normal to feel anxious in stressful situations, persistent or excessive anxiety may be a sign of an anxiety disorder. Recognising the symptoms is the first step toward finding the right support and treatment.

Common psychological symptoms of anxiety include:
  • Constant worry or a sense of dread
  • Feeling restless, nervous, or on edge
  • Difficulty concentrating or racing thoughts
  • Irritability or a short temper
  • A sense of intense fear, even when there’s no clear threat
Common physical symptoms include:
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Tightness in the chest or shortness of breath
  • Muscle tension or trembling
  • Nausea or digestive issues
  • Sweating or feeling unusually hot
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
These symptoms are often linked to different types of anxiety disorders, including:
  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Panic disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder (social phobia)
  • Separation anxiety disorder
  • Specific phobias
  • Selective mutism

Psychiatry for Anxiety

Seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety can be a vital step in understanding and managing your symptoms. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health conditions and are uniquely qualified to diagnose anxiety disorders, provide therapeutic guidance, and prescribe medication when appropriate.

Following a thorough assessment, a psychiatrist will help identify the most appropriate treatment options for your needs. This may include:

  • Psychological therapies – such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), exposure therapy (this is particularly useful for extreme specific phobias), or other talking therapies to address unhelpful thought patterns and build effective coping strategies
  • Medication – including anti-anxiety medications, such as SSRIs or beta blockers, to manage symptoms and support longer-term recovery
  • Support treating mental health conditions other than anxiety – many people with anxiety also experience depression or other mental health problems, which your psychiatrist can also treat
  • Lifestyle guidance – offering practical tips and stress management strategies, relaxation techniques, and more, treating anxiety in everyday life as well as easing significant episodes such as panic attacks.

Psychiatrists can also write professional reports and collaborate with other mental health providers and therapists to ensure you receive joined-up care in a supportive environment.

If you experience anxiety symptoms on a regular basis, or if you’re finding it difficult to manage severe anxiety, speaking to a psychiatrist can make all the difference. With the right support, most people experience meaningful relief from their symptoms and regain control of their lives.

Dr McCann provides expert support for individuals are experiencing anxiety or have anxiety disorders. He offers a range of services to help individuals better understand their needs and access the right support.

With Dr McCann, you will go through assessments to accurately diagnose various anxiety disorders, and create a personalised plan to help you overcome your anxiety and start enjoying life again.

Treatment plans often incorporate talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which has been shown to be effective in addressing anxiety symptoms.
