Signs and Symptoms of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders can present in different ways depending on the type, but they often involve serious disruptions in eating patterns, weight regulation, and emotional wellbeing.

Common symptoms include:
  • Restrictive eating or fear of gaining weight
  • Episodes of binge eating, often followed by shame or distress
  • Purging behaviours, such as vomiting or laxative misuse
  • Intense fear around certain foods or eating in front of others
  • Secrecy around food and avoidance of meals
  • Excessive exercise, especially when rigid or compulsive

Eating disorders also frequently co-occur with other mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Receiving an early diagnosis is key to reducing serious health complications like nutritional deficiencies, electrolyte imbalances, bone density loss, and organ strain.

Common eating disorders include:
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Rumination disorder
  • Pica – craving things that are not food, such as paint, dirt or paper
  • Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)
  • Other specified feeding and eating disorder (OSFED)

Psychiatry for Eating Disorders

Psychiatry plays an essential role in treating eating disorders — particularly when complex or co-occurring conditions are present. A Consultant Psychiatrist provides:

  • Assessment and diagnosis of eating disorders
  • Identification of co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Medication management, when appropriate (e.g. SSRIs for anxiety, mood stabilisers)
  • Treatment planning, which may include talking therapy, lifestyle recommendations, and medical referrals
  • Coordination of care with dietitians or therapists
  • Provision of clinical reports where needed for GPs, insurers, or work/school

The goal is to help you stabilise your physical and mental health and well-being, reduce harmful behaviours that may trigger your condition, and provide support for long-term management and recovery in a safe and supportive environment, or safely from your home with the help of online treatment.

  • Written report with treatment recommendations
  • No GP referral required
